Letitia’s Wholecloth

This quilt was made in the 1930s for Lady Aberdare at Blaenau, near Ammanford by Letitia Davies in the Llandeilo area. This wholecloth quilt in pink and green is hand quilted in the medallion style with pink thread using designs of fans, clubs and leaves. There are knots showing on the reverse.
Pink Diamond Comforter

This is a commercially produced, reversible comforter dating from the 1930s or 1940s. Made from pink plain and floral cotton with a fleece wadding, the comforter has a central diamond surrounded by a rectangle and a border. It has been quilted in pale pink thread in a zigzag pattern. 2125 x 1650mm.
Woollen Shawl

This is a traditional Welsh shawl with a hand-rolled fringe made from a woollen, woven check in twill weave. Bought for 50p from a charity shop in Newtown, it was rescued from a box labelled ‘dog blankets’. It is in the natural fleece colours of beige and cream. 1202 x 1308 mm plus a fringe of 130mm.
Red Paisley Quilt

This wholecloth quilt in a red paisley design has been hand quilted in red cotton thread. There are some spirals in evidence. The quilt is reversible and each side is the same. The wadding is possibly either a blanket or another quilt – it is very heavy although not as big as the quilt on the outside. 2002 x 1585mm.
Cotton Wholecloth Quilt

This quilt is one of a batch of quilts made by Lizzie Jane Williams who lived near Llandovery. They were passed down her family and ended up in the home of her grandson in Llanidloes where they were stored in a coffer. The quilt top is made of a fine cotton plain weave cloth with a small red print on it. The reverse is of a slightly heavier cotton with a printed broken stripe in red. The wadding is carded wool and the quilting is done by hand in white cotton thread. There is s central medallion with borders of fans, spirals on stems and cross hatching. 1760 x 1730mm.
Maroon and Mustard Wholecloth Quilt

This quilt is one of a batch of quilts made by Lizzie Jane Williams who lived near Llandovery. This quilt is very similar to another one in the same batch and is a reversible wholecloth quilt of plain weave wool flannel – mustard on one side, maroon on the other. Floral Comforter

Dating from the 1930s/40s, this is a commercially produced comforter made of floral cretonne cotton. The top is a wholecloth of a beige background with a pattern of blue and red flowers. The reverse is a piece of gold cotton fabric and there is a fleece wadding. The comforter has been machine quilted in white cotton in an all-over zig zag pattern. 2165 x 1675mm.
Thick Red Quilt

This quilt was rescued by the donor from an Oxfam shop in Wrexham. It is a wholecloth quilt which is made from widths of cotton sateen fabric which are red on one side and gold on the other. The widths have been joined by machine stitching. The quilt was originally handquilted in white thread, in a pattern of spirals with leaves in two corners. There is a quatrefoil in the centre with echo quilting. At some point, the quilting has been repaired with red and maroon hand stitching. 2084 x 1802mm.
Bridgend Mill Blanket

This was the first double sided blanket off the loom at Bridgend Mill, Llanidloes. The maker came to Llanidloes from Hawick to set up production of double-sided material and his grandson gave the blanket to our donor. One side is in shades of brown and mustard, the reverse in pinky red tones. It has a check pattern and is fringed on two sides. 1640 x 1390mm.
Pink and Blue Wholecloth Quilt

This wholecloth quilt, date unknown, is made from cotton sateen in pink on one side and blue on the reverse. In between is either a flannelette sheet or a thin blanket. The quilt has been hand quilted with dark pink thread in a design of spirals, flowers and leaves around a central medallion. 2045 x 2020mm.
Wholecloth Quilt

This is one of two quilts donated together. It was made in the 1930s by a lady from Carmarthenshire and was donated by a family member. It’s a wholecloth quilt with a top in pale pink cotton sateen and a reverse of a pink paisley design cotton sateen. The wadding is wool. The good quality hand quilting is done with maroon cotton thread in a design with a central medallion with borders, combining spirals and petal shapes. 2045 x 1635mm.
Yellow and Green Wholecloth Quilt

This is a wholecloth quilt made in Ystradgynlais between 1860 and 18880. It was made by the wife of a colliery manager and was donated by the maker’s grandson. Made from cotton sateen, the quilt top is three widths of yellow fabric pieced horizontally by machine. There is a piece of green cotton sateen on the reverse and the wadding is a mixture of blanket, old clothes and wool. It is hand quilted in brown cotton thread with a central medallion design and borders. There are laurel leaves, roses, spirals and fans. 2120 x 2060mm
Floral Wholecloth

This quilt has an older quilt inside, which acts as a wadding. The inner quilt has one side of a blue/green sateen with white printed flowers on, a layer of wadding and a reverse of white sateen. It has been hand quilted. The new top and reverse are both of printed cotton sateen with an open weave which has a red on white floral design printed on. The outer quilting is done by hand with white cotton thread in a design of chevrons and parallel lines. Unfortunately, the wadding in the inner quilt has all clumped together as a result of some very aggressive cleaning. 1750 x 1700mm.
Cream and Green Wholecloth

Made in the 1930s, this is a wholecloth frame quilt. The top and reverse are both made from three fabric widths of cotton sateen, with cream on one side and green on the other. Carded wool has been used for the wadding and the layers have been joined with fine hand quilting in cream cotton thread. 2065 x 1985mm.
Blue and Maroon Wholecloth

Made around 1890/1900. this wholecloth quilt, which is probably Welsh, is made from a plain weave cotton sateen in maroon on one side and in blue on the reverse. The wadding is of quite thick, carded wool. The quilt has been hand quilted in a faded red cotton. There is a central medallion surrounded by spirals, arches, diamonds and chevrons. To conserve it, it has been overlaid on the reverse side with navy blue net using a running stitch in a polyester filament.1760 x 1560mm.
Small Floral Wholecloth

This quilt has a top of plain weave cotton in a pink and white floral design. The reverse is a yellow cotton sateen. Between both is a pinky/mauve blanket and the whole has been hand quilted together in yellow thread with a central medallion and fans around the edge in two borders. This quilt has been well used. 1650 x 1425mm
Red Wholecloth Quilt

This quilt was made in Rhayader by the donor’s sister-in-law’s mother. It is made of furnishing fabrics of a cotton/rayon mix. There are two pieces of fabric, with a woven floral pattern, hand sewn together with a central seam on both sides. The top is crimson, the reverse is green and between these is a grey wool wadding. The quilt is hand quilted with a leaf green thread and has a central medallion with a pattern of spirals, leaves and a chain of diamonds. This is surrounded by two borders. 2380 x 2150mm.
Tan Wholecloth Quilt

This is a Welsh wholecloth quilt in a tan coloured cotton sateen (although it could originally have been white) which came from a house in Carmarthen and was donated by a family member. It has a wadding of carded wool and a reverse made from a cotton fabric with a floral design in pink. It has been beautifully and heavily hand quilted in a white thread using typically Welsh symbols. There is a central medallion with leaves and a cable. There are fans in the corners with cables, leaves and roses around. There is a border of a trellis filled with spirals and an outer border with leaves, tulips, spirals and, in the corners, eight pointed stars. 2070 x 1906mm.
Pink Floral Comforter

This commercially produced comforter was made in the 1930s or 1940s is made from pale pink and floral cottons and is machine quilted in white cotton with a zigzag pattern all over. It has a pale pink cotton reverse and a lumpy wadding – probably of wool fleece. It has been bound with pale pink cotton bias binding. 1680 x 1320mm.
Green and Mustard Welsh Wholecloth

This quilt was bought by the donor at Dolgellau cattle market in the early 1990s although it was made around 1930. It is a reversible wholecloth quilt made from cotton sateen in green on one side and mustard on the other, although the green side is more faded, suggesting that this side was favoured as the top. Carded wool has been used as a wadding and the whole has been finely hand quilted using green thread. There is a central medallion with borders. The inner border has been quilted with diamonds and fans. The outer border has zigzags and spirals. 2130 x 1940mm.
Pink and Teal Flannel Wholecloth

This quilt was bought by the donor at Dolgellau cattle market in the early 1990s. This is mainly a wholecloth quilt made from pink twill flannel on one side and teal plain weave flannel on the other, although the pink side (which is probably the top) has one corner of a different pink flannel. The wadding is a thin, cream flannel blanket with a thin purple stripe. The quilt has been hand quilted with a red thread. There is a central medallion and borders with spirals, zigzags, trellis hatching and fans in the corners. There are knots on the teal side, which is in three sections. 1902 x 1902mm.
Mustard and Floral Wholecloth

Bought in an auction in Machynlleth prior to 1993, this was donated to us in 2011. It is a reversible wholecloth quilt made from, on one side mustard cotton sateen and , on the other, a faded floral cotton sateen in shades of pink. The wadding is wool. The quilt has been hand quilted with a central medallion and borders with a design of fans, arches, spirals, roses and trellis. 2170 x 1950mm.
Welsh Child’s Wholecloth

This is a very simple wholecloth quilt made from a deep pink damask curtain fabric – possibly in the 1930s or 1940s. It is roughly hand quilted in strips and there is diamond quilting between the strips. The edges are butted together and hand sewn and the wadding, we think, is a wool blanket. 1400 x 970mm
North England Wholecloth

This is a typical Durham style wholecloth, possibly made as a result of a Rural Industries Bureau class. Made of cotton sateen, the front is a faded purple and the reverse a faded yellow. Carded wool has been used as wadding and the quilt has been hand quilted using a white thread. There is a central flower, surrounded by feathers with swags around the sides – typical of Northern wholecloth quilts. 2330 x 1826mm
Floral Wholecloth With A Flounce

This quilt belonged to the donor’s grandmother who lived in Treorchy all her life. She was born in 1900 and married a coal miner. Welsh was her first language. Our donor can remember her grandparents using the quilt on her bed and that her grandmother had a treadle sewing machine.
Made from cotton fabrics, this reversible quilt has a pink paisley pattern on one side and on the other is a design of floral baskets between wide wavy lines. It’s possible that another quilt forms the wadding. The quilt has been machine quilted with a white cotton thread in a basic cross hatching style. There is a zigzag line all around the edge to hold the flounce in place. 2180 x 1850mm.
A Blue Welsh Wholecloth Cot Quilt

Made in c 1880 this was donated to us in 2015. It was originally a cot quilt made from blue silk which has been turned into a pyjama case. It is typically Welsh - very finely hand-quilted on wholecloth in a blue thread. There is a central medallion with cross hatching, fans in the corners, and some leaves and spirals. 800 x 540mm.
Reversible Pink Wholecloth

Our donor remembers buying this quilt in Carmarthen in about 1990. Made in the 1920s or 1930s it is made of cotton sateen and is a reversible quilt with pale pink fabric on one side and pale blue on the other. It could have been made to be ready in time for the birth of a baby so that the appropriate side could have been chosen for display. The wadding is a kapok filling and the quilt has been hand stitched in pink thread. There is a central medallion with a square on point, surrounded by circles. There are also stars, tulips, spirals and hatching incorporated into the design. A flounce has been added by machine stitching around all four edges with a machine stitched butted edge which has frayed away. 1903 x 1702mm.
A Welsh Cream Silk Cot Wholecloth

Probably made in the 1930s and is a wholecloth in the RIB style. It has five eyelet holes to allow the baby to stay cool. Made of silk with a woollen wadding, it is Welsh hand quilted in a cream cotton thread. Fans in the corners, half-moons on the longer edges, and small half circles on the short edges. The outer border is made up of five lines of stitching. 715 x 50mm.
Royal Blue Wholecloth

This Welsh wholecloth quilt was made in the 1930s in the Aberystwyth area. It is typically Welsh and is unsophisticated but very durable. Each side of the quilt has been made from two pieces royal blue cotton twill which have machine joined. There is a wadding of thick wool. The quilt has been evenly hand quilted in white thread. There is a central medallion depicting four leaves separated by spirals. This is encircled by two rows of stitching then a cable circle. There are several borders with patterns of hearts, chevrons, cross hatching and spirals. The outer border has a pattern of laurel leaves and spirals with five spirals in each corner and a four-pointed star. 1990mm x 1740mm.
Maroon Wholecloth Quilt

This is a Welsh wholecloth quilt made during the 1930s probably under the Rural Industries Board (RIB) programme. It is a reversible quilt and each side is made from three strips of maroon cotton sateen (now slightly faded to brown) which have been machine stitched together. With a wadding consisting of either a blanket or an older quilt, it has been neatly hand quilted in a maroon thread. There is an ogee shaped central medallion with a design of roses, cables, and feathers with leaves in the corners. Although these are all typical Welsh motifs, they have been put together in an unusual but pleasing way. 2015mm x 2245mm.
