Quilt Association celebrates 20th summer show

14 July 2014

Admiring art quilts by the Welsh group Cwilt Cymru in Gallery 2.

Jean Pegg opened the exhibition at the end of her first year as chair of The Quilt Association.

She spoke about the early days in the Association's history, and that first exhibition in 1995, before bringing everyone up to date with details of this year's show.

The antique quilts are from the Association's collection of over 175 items, many of which have been donated over the past twenty years.

For the 10th anniversary in 2004 Diana Brockway made this special Minerva wall-hanging with its 10th birthday badge.

The first ever donation! An unfinished log cabin piece from the late 19th century made by a woman with 8 children to care for.

The antique quilts are themed into six different areas - Log cabin, hexagons, wholecloths, Welsh flannel, red and white and medallion quilts.

In the foreground is the Military Quilt, an exquisitely handpieced mosaic patchwork quilt from South Wales, you can read more about it here.

Studying the fine quilting on a Rural Industries Bureau quilt from the 1930s. A recent addition to the collection, you can read more here.

Cynth Weyman, a quilter from West Wales who won the competition organised to celebrate the 2004 anniversary, finds out more about Cwilt Cymru.

Meanwhile, across the other side of Gallery 2, serious inspection of some of Sandra Meech's exhibition - Journeys - the Arctic and Beyond - takes place. Just how did she do that exactly...?

Sandra is inspired by the effects of global warming and melting ice. Another visitor takes a closer look.

Inuit people from North Canada feature heavily in Sandra's work. She transfers photographs onto cotton and then paints and stitches into the resulting fabrics.

Of course, who can leave without a shopping opportunity? Fabrics, sundries, and items made by the local group - Welsh Heritage Quilters - are available in the shop.

Two visitors in front of a China themed quilt to celebrate 20 years of exhibitions at Minerva!

We hope to see you in person to check it out for yourselves. The show is open daily except Sundays 10.30am - 4.30pm until 15 September 2014.
