6th World Textile Day in Mid Wales

9 April 2014

Hard to believe that we have hosted this hugely popular day for six years now. It all started in 2008 when a few dedicated world textile experts were sitting in the bar at the Knitting and Stitching Show and suddenly a new idea was sprung...

The Quilt Association hosted the first ever World Textile Day in 2009:

"People came from far and wide: Wales, Shropshire, Manchester, Liverpool, Bristol. One enthusiast drove all the way from Lincoln! When we closed the doors at 5pm, we were all exhausted from the general buzz of enthusiasm."

2014's event again drew visitors from far and wide to find out more about "The Spirit of the Cloth".

The concept of the day is simple enough, with three key attractions:

  • a free exhibition of stitched, embroidered and woven textiles and artefacts from around the world
  • lectures on key topics by experts in the field
  • and sales tables crammed full of textile goodies from all around the globe.

This year John Gillow spoke about Textiles of the Islamic World, whilst Martin Conlan's lecture focussed on the Sacred and Spiritual Textiles of South West China.

Next year's event is already being planned. Put Saturday 14 March 2015 in your diary now and don't miss the 7th chance to delve into the amazing world of textiles from around the world!
